Taper — Often confused with a fade. A taper only shortens the hair at the neckline and around the ears, leaving the rest of the sides one length. Subtler, and grows out almost invisibly.

Foil fade — A fade finished with a foil shaver instead of clippers alone. The foil gets closer than a clipper can, so the transition into skin is smoother and the finish is sharper. Takes longer, and worth it for the cleanest result.

• Razor/Foil Fade — 45 minutes, $40. The extra time is the foil work.

• Buzz Cut — 15 minutes, $20. One guard all over, no blending.

• The Royalz Treatment — 35 minutes, $42. Haircut, neck shave, and shampoo. Available at our Oregon City location.

Add a beard trim or line-up for $22 if you want the whole thing to match. A $7 neck shave between cuts will stretch a fade about another week.

How to ask for what you want

The most useful thing you can tell your barber isn’t a name — it’s a reference. Bring a photo, even a bad one. “Mid fade” means something slightly different to every barber alive; a picture doesn’t.

If you don’t have a photo, answer these three and you’ll get close:

• How short do you want the sides at the bottom — skin, or leave some length?

• Where should the fade start — above the ear, at the temple, or higher?

• How much are you keeping on top?
